Leaving the classroom behind and stepping into the world of homeschooling was a life-changing decision for me. It all started when I chose to leave my teaching job, a decision that initially felt immense but ultimately ignited a new passion within me: aiding families as they tackle homeschooling challenges.
The Big Decision to Quit Teaching
After years spent in a structured classroom, I realized that the routine had become more of a cage than a comfort. Curriculum deadlines, standardized tests, and a steep list of regulations often overshadowed my love for teaching. I was eager for a fresh start—something personalized and flexible.
The turning point came when I recognised that by leaving my job, I could foster individualised learning experiences. It was daunting to step away from the security of a steady job, but I soon discovered the freedom that came with designing tailored learning journeys. In fact, studies show that students in homeschool settings often outperform their publicly-schooled peers on standardised tests by about 15 to 30 percent, highlighting the potential benefits of a customised approach.

Discovering the Homeschooling World
After leaving my teaching role, I dove deep into the homeschooling community. I attended workshops and connected with local groups, eagerly collecting resources that could empower families.
Homeschooling is not limited to academics; it is about nurturing curiosity in children by allowing them to explore subjects that excite them. Yes, this could be work in books but it could also be nature walks and messy science experiments! Many parents shared their apprehensions about taking on this responsibility, often feeling lost without traditional schooling structures. I quickly recognised that my mission was to support these families through every step of their educational journeys.
Finding My Niche
My journey revealed countless ways to assist families. From offering tailored curriculum suggestions to guiding parents through the legalities of homeschooling, I found profound satisfaction in every interaction and to my surprise, I found that less is more! When we took away the stress from the child, they wanted to learn. The key is to recognise what true learning really looks like when we have been conditioned to view learning through a lens of text books. ots of sitting and writing - and tests.
One of the most rewarding aspects is helping families identify their children’s distinct learning styles. Each child possesses unique gifts that may not thrive under a standard curriculum.

The Importance of Positive Role Models
I observed that a crucial factor in children engaging with their learning was the influence of the adults and peers around them. If they chose to learn piano, we arranged for a skilled piano teacher to come to our home. When they were interested in a sport, we enrolled them in clubs. We quickly discovered that their behavior deteriorated when the teaching style was authoritative or if their teacher was kind but with firm boundaries then the childrens skills improved dramatically.
A New Chapter in Education
Reflecting on my journey, I am amazed at the transformation I've undergone since leaving my teaching job. Supporting families on their homeschooling quests has provided a level of fulfillment I never anticipated.
For anyone considering a similar path, it's important to know that stepping outside the familiar classroom framework can lead to opportunities. The transition may be challenging, but the outcome is rewarding for both you and the families you influence.

Embracing the role of homeschooling support has unlocked a world of opportunities—one that I embrace daily. If you are on the fence about making a change, trust your instincts. Your new journey could lead to fulfilling and unexpected adventures.
