I am governess to a remarkable young boy who possesses an insatiable passion for numbers, constantly seeking out the most grandiose numerical challenges.
The quest to satisfy his thirst for knowledge led me on a challenging journey through the vast expanse of online resources, in search of age-appropriate books and engaging videos. It became evident that the existing materials fell short of capturing his passion for numbers, prompting me to take matters into my own hands.
As educators, it is our sacred duty to wholeheartedly support and nurture a child's interests from the moment they are sparked. Recognising the importance of fostering his enthusiasm, I decided to create a video on YouTube tailored to his unique fascination. You can see this early attempt at video making here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CS089cojgsc&t=26s
To my delight, the video quickly gained traction, amassing over two thousand views in less than a month. I then improved the video and, although it hasn't received as many views, I often use it as a learning resource, which you can see here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hG35M9qAuCg&t=78s
However, I also understood the significance of balancing screen time with tangible experiences. This realisation inspired me to craft a physical book that would not only cater to his passion but also provide a hands-on alternative, allowing children to immerse themselves in the world of numbers without being glued to a screen. By offering a multifaceted approach, I aimed to enrich his learning experience and encourage a healthy balance between digital and physical engagement. You can see this book here:
Creating educational materials tailored to a child's specific interests can be a rewarding endeavor that not only enhances their learning but also strengthens the bond between educator and learner. By recognizing and nurturing a child's passion, we can ignite a lifelong love for learning and exploration. The process of developing personalized resources, whether it be videos, books, or hands-on activities, allows for a deeper understanding of the child's unique needs and preferences.
Moreover, the journey of crafting educational content can be a creative outlet for educators, sparking innovative ideas and approaches to teaching. It empowers us to think outside the box and tailor our methods to suit the individual learning styles of our students. This personalized approach not only fosters a deeper connection with the material but also promotes a sense of ownership and pride in the learning process.
As we navigate the ever-evolving landscape of education, it is essential to adapt and create resources that resonate with the learners we are guiding. By embracing this philosophy, we can transform traditional teaching methods into dynamic, engaging experiences that inspire a lifelong love for learning.
After realizing that creating our own resources can be faster, easier, and more tailored to our needs, I believe it leads to a more enriching educational experience compared to relying solely on pre-existing resources that may not fully meet our requirements.
Parents and educators, have you encountered challenges in finding suitable books or online content? What projects are you currently engaged in?
