As a professional educator who has always been passionate about working with children, my career took a transformative turn that led me from the bustling classrooms of the UK to the enchanting world of international education. It all began with a desire to find a more fulfilling and stress-free way to impact young minds.
Embracing Change
Teaching in the UK meant managing large class sizes and copious amounts of paperwork, creating a level of stress that hindered my true passion for nurturing young learners. Fueled by a desire to seek a more rewarding experience, I made the bold decision to move abroad and pursue a teaching role in an International school.
Unexpected Encounters: A Meeting with a Governess
It was while I was a class teacher in one of the most prestigious schools in Russia where my path crossed with that of a governess—a profession that was relatively unfamiliar to me at the time. What struck me most was the profound level of trust she was afforded, coupled with a significantly higher pay scale compared to my teaching position, which up until now had been my dream job. This encounter sparked a curiosity in me that would later redefine my career trajectory.
A New Chapter: Becoming an International Governess
Intrigued by the prospect of a role that offered both financial reward and increased autonomy in working with children, I embarked on a journey to become an international governess. The transition was not just a change of title but a shift in mindset—a realisation that there are diverse paths to impacting young lives beyond traditional teaching roles.
Personal Insights and Reflection
The decision to transition from a classroom teacher to an international governess was not without its uncertainties, but looking back, I have no regrets. The opportunity to work in a role that values trust, autonomy, and provides a different perspective on child education has been both fulfilling and enriching. My first role was in the stunning St Tropez, staying in a gorgeous villa with picturesque views of the beach and an infinity pool. My days consisted of supporting just one seven year old with her English and general curiosities during her summer holiday. I was given all travel expenses, had my meals made by a chef and rarely saw the girl as she visited different sports coaches or attended family outings. There was no turning back after this!
